I learned very quickly that a Mini Bernedoodle will follow you from room to room. I call them Velcro dogs and owning one means you will never be alone again.

In this article, we’ll explore the unique characteristics and temperament of the Mini Bernedoodle, shedding light on why this breed has captured the hearts of so many dog lovers.  Whether you’re considering adding one to your family or simply curious about what makes this breed so unique, read on to discover everything you need to know.

Origins of the Mini Bernedoodle

The Mini Bernedoodle is a relatively new designer breed intentionally created to combine the best traits of two beloved dogs: the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Miniature Poodle. Understanding its origins helps explain why this breed is such a remarkable companion.

  • Bernese Mountain Dog Heritage
Hailing from the Swiss Alps, the Bernese Mountain Dog is known for its strength, loyalty, and gentle temperament. Historically bred as working dogs, they excelled at herding cattle and pulling carts. Their large size and striking tricolor coat make them a standout, but their loving nature endears them to families. Bernese Mountain Dogs are often described as calm and affectionate, making them ideal family pets.
  • Miniature Poodle Heritage
Miniature Poodles originated in Germany and France and are renowned for their intelligence, agility, and hypoallergenic coats. Bred initially as water retrievers in the standard version, miniature Poodles have evolved into one of the most trainable and versatile dog breeds. Although miniature Poodles are smaller than their standard counterparts, they carry the same sharp wit, energetic nature, and sociable personality.
  • The Perfect Hybrid
The Mini Bernedoodle was created to bring the best of both breeds together. By combining the Bernese Mountain Dog’s loyal and gentle nature with the Miniature Poodle’s intelligence and low-shedding coat, breeders aimed to create a companion that fits into modern lifestyles. The Mini Bernedoodle is smaller than the Standard Bernedoodle, making it more suitable for apartments or homes with limited space while retaining its larger relatives’ loving, family-friendly personality.

Through thoughtful and ethical breeding practices, the Mini Bernedoodle has become a sought-after companion for people seeking a dog that is affectionate and highly trainable. This hybrid continues to grow in popularity for good reason—it’s the ideal mix of brains, beauty, and heart!

Physical Characteristics

The Mini Bernedoodle’s appearance is as charming as its personality. A proper mix of its parent breeds, this hybrid’s physical characteristics can vary slightly depending on the dominant traits inherited. However, some key features make the Mini Bernedoodle both striking and unique.

Most Mini Bernedoodles fall within the medium-small range, standing about 14 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing anywhere from 26 to 35 pounds. This compact size makes them adaptable to various living spaces, from city apartments to suburban homes. Despite their smaller stature compared to Standard Bernedoodles, they carry a sturdy and athletic build, which reflects their Bernese Mountain Dog lineage.

The Mini Bernedoodle’s coat is one of its standout features. Thanks to its Poodle parent, their coat is typically low-shedding and hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for allergy-sensitive households. Their fur can range from soft waves to tight curls, and their color patterns are often vibrant and eye-catching. Tricolor coats—black, white, and brown—are among the most popular, though bi-color or solid variations are also common. Their expressive eyes and often slightly floppy ears give them a sweet, approachable look that makes them instantly endearing.

Temperament and Personality

When it comes to personality, Mini Bernedoodles are known for their incredible balance of traits. They embody the best qualities of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Miniature Poodle, creating an affectionate, playful, and intelligent companion.

Mini Bernedoodles are highly affectionate and thrive on being close to their family. Their loyalty is unmatched, and they quickly form strong bonds with their human companions. Whether snuggling on the couch, following you from room to room, or greeting you excitedly when you return home, these dogs are happiest when they’re with their loved ones. Their Bernese lineage contributes to their naturally nurturing nature, making them incredibly gentle with children and patient in family settings.

One of the most appealing aspects of the Mini Bernedoodle’s temperament is its intelligence and trainability. Inheriting the sharp mind of the Poodle, they are quick learners who enjoy mental challenges. Whether mastering basic commands, learning fun tricks, or participating in agility training, Mini Bernedoodles are eager to please and excel in structured learning environments. This makes them a fantastic choice for first-time dog owners or families looking for a breed that’s easy to train.

Despite their intelligence, Mini Bernedoodles also have a playful, goofy side. They love to romp around, play fetch, and explore the outdoors. While energetic, they’re not overly hyper and can adapt to various activity levels. Regular exercise, such as daily walks and playtime, keeps them happy and prevents boredom. Their Bernese ancestry lends them a calmer demeanor, which balances out their Poodle-like enthusiasm, creating an energetic dog without being overwhelming.

Socialization is another key trait of the Mini Bernedoodle. These dogs are naturally friendly and outgoing, making them great with strangers, other dogs, and even cats. While early socialization is essential to help them develop confidence, they generally have an approachable and amiable personality. They’re the type of dog that can charm nearly anyone they meet.

Perhaps one of their only drawbacks—if it can be considered one—is their need for attention. Mini Bernedoodles are highly people-oriented and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. They thrive in homes where someone is present for most of the day or where they can be included in daily activities. Their love for companionship makes them ideal for families, retirees, or anyone who enjoys spending time with their dog.

In summary, the Mini Bernedoodle’s temperament perfectly combines loyalty, intelligence, and playfulness. Whether you’re looking for a devoted family pet, a gentle companion for children, or a trainable dog with a cheerful disposition, this breed ticks all the boxes. Their adaptable personality ensures they fit into various lifestyles, making them one of the most versatile and lovable hybrids.

Living with a Mini Bernedoodle

Bringing a Mini Bernedoodle into your home means welcoming a dog that thrives on companionship and interaction. These lovable pups adapt well to various living situations, whether it’s a bustling family home or a quieter environment. However, understanding their needs and quirks will help them live a happy, balanced life.

Mini Bernedoodles require moderate exercise to stay physically and mentally stimulated. They enjoy daily walks, backyard play sessions, or games like fetch. While they’re not as high-energy as some breeds, they still need enough activity to keep boredom and destructive behaviors at bay. Engaging them in puzzles or training exercises is also a great way to challenge their sharp minds.

Their social nature makes them excellent family pets. They’re gentle with children and can bond with other pets if introduced properly. However, they don’t do well in homes where they are left alone for extended periods, as their love for human interaction can lead to separation anxiety. Homes with flexible schedules or other pets to keep them company are ideal.

Grooming is another important aspect of living with a Mini Bernedoodle. Their low to non-shedding coats still require regular maintenance to stay healthy and mat-free. Weekly brushing is often enough for wavy coats, while curlier fur may need more frequent attention. Many owners opt for professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks to keep their dogs looking and feeling their best.

Some critical considerations for living with a Mini Bernedoodle include:

  • Exercise: Regular physical and mental stimulation is essential.
  • Grooming: Plan for consistent brushing and occasional professional grooming.
  • Attention: These dogs need companionship and don’t thrive in isolation.

By understanding these needs, you can ensure your Mini Bernedoodle is a happy, well-adjusted family member.

How Easy are Mini Bernedoodles to Train?

Mini Bernedoodles are incredibly smart and thrive best when engaged daily with new things to learn.  Setting aside 10 minutes twice a day to teach or review a new command or trick will help exercise their mind which is equally important to physical exercise.  They respond best to positive reinforcement and providing high value rewards (treats) will keep them focused on you showing their willingness to learn.  Some Mini Bernedoodles can show a little stubborn side making consistency and using a reward system your best training tools.  Training that includes physical activity at least 30 minutes twice a day creates great bonds with dogs and their humans.  Physical activities can include playing fetch with their favorite ball, playing hide and seek, or practicing leash manners on walks around the block.

Health and Lifespan

Mini Bernedoodles are generally healthy dogs, thanks to the careful breeding practices that aim to reduce the risk of genetic health issues. However, like any breed, they can be prone to certain conditions inherited from their parent breeds. Being aware of potential health concerns and taking proactive measures can help ensure your dog’s long, healthy life.

Some health issues that Mini Bernedoodles may face include:

  • Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: These joint conditions can affect mobility and may require management as the dog ages.
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)A degenerative eye condition that can lead to vision loss over time.
  • Allergies: Some Mini Bernedoodles may develop skin or food sensitivities.

Working with a responsible and ethical breeder of Mini Bernedoodles that completes health screening certifications on their parent dogs can help avoid health issues in their offspring.  Look for a breeder that does full genetic disease panels on each parent dog as well as OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) certifications for eyes, heart, hips, elbows, and patellas.  These certifications should be shared with you before you commit to working with a breeder. A parent dog that is a carrier of a disease should never be paired with another dog that carries for that same disease.  It takes a like disease gene from each parent for a puppy to inherit a pair of disease genes allowing that disease to be expressed.  There are many diseases that can now be completely avoided with proper and ethical pairing selections.

Routine veterinary care is crucial for catching and managing potential health concerns early. Regular check-ups, vaccinations, and preventative treatments for fleas, ticks, and heartworms are all part of keeping your Mini Bernedoodle in good shape.  A natural flea and tick preventative is always recommended as we have seen many serious reactions to oral flea and tick preventatives including seizures and other neurological issues.

A Mini Bernedoodle can live a long, fulfilling life with proper care. Their average lifespan ranges from 12 to 15 years, giving you plenty of time to create lasting memories with your furry friend. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and mental enrichment will go a long way in supporting their overall health and well-being.

In summary, while Mini Bernedoodles are generally robust dogs, understanding their potential health risks and taking preventative steps can ensure they live their happiest, healthiest life.

Is a Mini Bernedoodle Right for You?

Deciding whether a Mini Bernedoodle is the right fit for your family involves considering their unique needs and personality traits. These lovable dogs are highly adaptable and versatile, but they also require a specific type of environment and care to thrive.

If you’re looking for a dog that combines loyalty, intelligence, and affection, the Mini Bernedoodle might be the perfect match. Their moderate energy level makes them suitable for individuals or families with an active lifestyle, but they’re equally content with cuddles and relaxation after playtime. Their size is another advantage, as they are small enough for apartment living yet sturdy enough for outdoor adventures.

One of the most important considerations is their strong desire for companionship. Mini Bernedoodles love being around people and don’t tolerate being left alone for long periods. They’ll appreciate your presence and thrive in your company if you have a flexible schedule or work from home. Families with children will also find that Mini Bernedoodles are gentle and patient, making them ideal for homes with kids of all ages.

If you work full time outside the home, this doesn’t mean a Mini Bernedoodle is not a good fit for you.  However, it will entail utilizing a trusted dog walker or finding a great doggy day care nearby.  Having someone stop in two to three times a day to walk your Mini Bernedoodle and provide some one on one interaction should suffice.  An even better option is allowing your dog to spend time with other dogs and humans at day care while you are at the office.  Bernedoodles are such friendly and social creatures, they will no doubt make friends at day care they look forward to playing with each day.  Your Mini Goldendoodle will come home with you each evening ready to engage with you or to snuggle on the couch.

Are Mini Bernedoodles Easy to Groom?

It’s essential to be prepared for the grooming needs that come with Mini Bernedoodles’ beautiful coats. Regular brushing and professional grooming are necessary to keep their fur healthy and prevent matting. Keeping their coat long and flowing will require daily brushing with a slicker brush followed by a metal comb to find the small tangles deeper in the coat.  Not addressing these tangles allows them to become mats quickly.  Mats are uncomfortable to Mini Bernedoodles and left unaddressed can cause sores and skin issues.  The only way to remove mats is to cut them out which defeats the aesthetic reasons for keeping the coat long in the first place.  A shorter haircut can greatly reduce the amount of brushing needed and is a better choice for those humans who do not have the time or inclination to do full brush outs daily.

Do Mini Bernedoodles Have Separation Anxiety?

Mini Bernedoodles are extremely tuned into their humans.  They are sensitive and have emotional intelligence beyond many other breeds of dogs.  Their intelligence requires mental stimulation, so investing time in training, puzzles, or interactive play will keep them happy and engaged. They need physical exercise as well, but leaving out the mental exercise is like teaching a child to climb a jungle gym but forgetting to teach them the alphabet.  A dog that is well rounded is better at problem solving.  A dog that can problem solve decreases their anxiety.  With that said, Mini Bernedoodles do best in homes where they have human interaction throughout the day, or at least are not left home alone for long periods of time.

Do Mini Bernedoodles Shed?

Mini Bernedoodles begin by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Mini Poodle.  This is called a first generation or F1 litter.  Because Bernese Mountain Dogs do not carry any furnishing genes – the genes necessary to create a non-shedding coat – and Poodles carry two furnishing genes, all the puppies in an F1 litter will inherit a single copy of the furnishing gene.  It takes just one copy to be expressed visually and that is why even F1’s have fluffy coats and long hair that needs regular trimming.  While inheriting a single furnishing gene will greatly reduce the amount of shedding, it will not eliminate it.  Those families concerned about shedding due to allergies or housekeeping preferences would do best to work with a breeder that can provide a Mini Bernedoodle with two furnishing genes.  This is only possible in deeper generations and can only be determined by DNA testing on each individual puppy unless both parents have been tested and proven to carry two furnishing genes each.

Do Mini Bernedoodles Bark A Lot?

Mini Bernedoodles are not considered to be barkers.  However, even quiet breeds can be turned into barkers when they are bored or their personal needs are not met.  Spending long periods of time in a crate or home alone can create the need for your Mini Bernedoodle to sound the alarm.  This can be avoided by creating a schedule for mental and physical exercise.  They adapt best when they know what to expect as each day unfolds.

Are Mini Bernedoodles Good For First Time Owners?

Mini Bernedoodles can be a wonderful choice for a first time dog owner as long as they are committed to fulfilling the needs of this beautiful breed.  As with any new dog owner, it is recommended they either work with a trainer experienced in positive reinforcement training or they find an online training program to guide them.  Fox Creek Farm provides lots of training resources and advice and even has board and train trainers ready to pick up your puppy from us at eight weeks of age and provide you with a puppy many weeks later that has a solid training foundation for you to build upon.  A Mini Bernedoodle is an excellent choice for those willing to meet their physical, emotional, and grooming needs. In return, you’ll gain a devoted, cheerful companion who will bring joy and laughter to your life.

Pros and Cons to Owning a Mini Bernedoodle

It is easy to see the pros to owning a Mini Bernedoodle.  Having a dog that is easy on the eyes, that follows you everywhere you go, that loves to snuggle with you, and that shows loyalty in every activity covers the pros.  The cons are that to have privacy in the bathroom, you will have to shut the door BEFORE your Mini Bernedoodle follows you in.  Grooming is necessary to keep their coats healthy and looking their best and require brushing a few times a week.  Professional grooming is a must every 4-8 weeks.  Mini Bernedoodles can suffer from separation anxiety when left home alone regularly.

The Mini Bernedoodle is a delightful blend of affection, intelligence, and playfulness, making it one of the most beloved designer breeds today. Frequently Asked Questions about Mini Bernedoodles

What are the key characteristics and temperament of a Mini Bernedoodle?
Mini Bernedoodles are known for their affectionate, intelligent, and playful nature. They inherit loyalty and gentleness from the Bernese Mountain Dog and the intelligence and low to non-shedding coat of the Miniature Poodle. This combination results in a friendly, adaptable companion suitable for families, singles, and seniors.

How big do Mini Bernedoodles get, and are they suitable for apartment living?
Typically, Mini Bernedoodles stand between 14 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 26 to 35 pounds. Their moderate size and adaptable nature make them well-suited for apartment living, provided they receive regular exercise and mental stimulation.

Are Mini Bernedoodles hypoallergenic, and do they shed?
Thanks to their Poodle heritage, Mini Bernedoodles often have low or even non-shedding, hypoallergenic coats. However, coat types can vary from straight to curly, and some may shed minimally. Regular grooming helps maintain coat health and reduces shedding.

What is the lifespan of a Mini Bernedoodle, and are there common health concerns?
With proper care, Mini Bernedoodles typically live between 12 to 15 years. While generally healthy, they can be prone to conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and certain genetic issues inherited from their parent breeds. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential to monitor and maintain their health. Many genetic conditions can be completely avoided by working with a breeder that does physical and genetic health screening and certifications.

How much exercise and mental stimulation does a Mini Bernedoodle require?
Mini Bernedoodles have moderate energy levels and benefit from daily physical activity, such as walks and playtime, totaling about 45 to 60 minutes per day. They also thrive on mental stimulation through training sessions, puzzle toys, and interactive games to keep their intelligent minds engaged.

What should a Mini Bernedoodle not eat?

Mini Bernedoodles have the same nutritional needs as other breeds which also means they should not eat human food that is known to be poisonous to dogs.  Avoid chocolate, onions, garlic, chives, macadamia nuts, anything with caffeine (coffee, tea, energy drinks), grapes, raisins, or xylitol (sugar substitute).  Some of these items can cause life threatening health issues even in small doses such as acute kidney failure, heart failure, tremors, seizures, and even death.

Are Mini Bernedoodles good off leash?

Mini Bernedoodles can be excellent candidates for off leash exercise. As with any breed of dog, we find that consistent training on recall (coming when called) is critical before allowing them to have the freedom of off leash time.  Because of their loyalty to their human, it is uncommon they wish to be out of sight.  Of course, it is important to practice off leash exercise in open areas where there are no roads to cross or woods where visibility is limited.

Which is better, a boy or girl Mini Bernedoodle?

In all my years of owning dogs, I have not found one gender to be better than another.  There are differences I have found when keeping a male or female dog intact (not spayed or neutered) that can add challenges to keeping them safe.  However, all responsible breeders require by contract that the new owners desex their puppy at an appropriate age.  This is typically done between ten to twelve months of age.  Once a puppy is desexed, the hormones that determine temperament or personality traits that can be gender specific are removed.  I have found no real differences and personally would not choose a puppy on gender alone.

What are the negatives to owning a Mini Bernedoodle?

The positives way outweigh the negatives, but a few things worth mentioning are that Mini Bernedoodles require daily or every other day brushing if you keep their coat long.  They do not do well being left home alone for long periods of time.  They can be a little stubborn if you are not consistent in their training and exercise.

Where can I find the best Mini Bernedoodle?

It is important to work with an experienced ethical breeder that helps you prepare for your puppy as well as provides support for the life of your dog.  An extremely important detail is to confirm all the appropriate health testing has been completed on both parent dogs and that a 2 year (at a minimum) genetic defect warranty is provided.  This warranty should never require you to return the puppy to exercise the warranty.  Here at Fox Creek Farm, we have helped hundreds of families find their new puppy.  If you are ready to join the Fox Creek Farm family, check out our available Mini Bernedoodles here.

At Fox Creek Farms Goldendoodles and Bernedoodles, we are dedicated to breeding Mini Bernedoodles that exemplify these wonderful traits. Our commitment to ethical breeding practices ensures that each puppy is healthy, well-socialized, and ready to become a cherished member of your family.
