It’s essential to be prepared for the grooming needs that come with Mini Bernedoodles’ beautiful coats. Regular brushing and professional grooming are necessary to keep their fur healthy and prevent matting. Keeping their coat long and flowing will require daily brushing with a slicker brush followed by a metal comb to find the small tangles deeper in the coat.  Not addressing these tangles allows them to become mats quickly.  Mats are uncomfortable to Mini Bernedoodles and left unaddressed can cause sores and skin issues.  The only way to remove mats is to cut them out which defeats the aesthetic reasons for keeping the coat long in the first place.  A shorter haircut can greatly reduce the amount of brushing needed and is a better choice for those humans who do not have the time or inclination to do full brush outs daily.

Do Mini Bernedoodles Have Separation Anxiety?

Mini Bernedoodles are extremely tuned into their humans.  They are sensitive and have emotional intelligence beyond many other breeds of dogs.  Their intelligence requires mental stimulation, so investing time in training, puzzles, or interactive play will keep them happy and engaged. They need physical exercise as well, but leaving out the mental exercise is like teaching a child to climb a jungle gym but forgetting to teach them the alphabet.  A dog that is well rounded is better at problem solving.  A dog that can problem solve decreases their anxiety.  With that said, Mini Bernedoodles do best in homes where they have human interaction throughout the day, or at least are not left home alone for long periods of time.

Do Mini Bernedoodles Shed?

Mini Bernedoodles begin by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Mini Poodle.  This is called a first generation or F1 litter.  Because Bernese Mountain Dogs do not carry any furnishing genes – the genes necessary to create a non-shedding coat – and Poodles carry two furnishing genes, all the puppies in an F1 litter will inherit a single copy of the furnishing gene.  It takes just one copy to be expressed visually and that is why even F1’s have fluffy coats and long hair that needs regular trimming.  While inheriting a single furnishing gene will greatly reduce the amount of shedding, it will not eliminate it.  Those families concerned about shedding due to allergies or housekeeping preferences would do best to work with a breeder that can provide a Mini Bernedoodle with two furnishing genes.  This is only possible in deeper generations and can only be determined by DNA testing on each individual puppy unless both parents have been tested and proven to carry two furnishing genes each.

Do Mini Bernedoodles Bark A Lot?

Mini Bernedoodles are not considered to be barkers.  However, even quiet breeds can be turned into barkers when they are bored or their personal needs are not met.  Spending long periods of time in a crate or home alone can create the need for your Mini Bernedoodle to sound the alarm.  This can be avoided by creating a schedule for mental and physical exercise.  They adapt best when they know what to expect as each day unfolds.

Mini Bernedoodles can be excellent candidates for off leash exercise. As with any breed of dog, we find that consistent training on recall (coming when called) is critical before allowing them to have the freedom of off leash time.  Because of their loyalty to their human, it is uncommon they wish to be out of sight.  Of course, it is important to practice off leash exercise in open areas where there are no roads to cross or woods where visibility is limited.

Which is better, a boy or girl Mini Bernedoodle?

In all my years of owning dogs, I have not found one gender to be better than another.  There are differences I have found when keeping a male or female dog intact (not spayed or neutered) that can add challenges to keeping them safe.  However, all responsible breeders require by contract that the new owners desex their puppy at an appropriate age.  This is typically done between ten to twelve months of age.  Once a puppy is desexed, the hormones that determine temperament or personality traits that can be gender specific are removed.  I have found no real differences and personally would not choose a puppy on gender alone.

What are the negatives to owning a Mini Bernedoodle?

The positives way outweigh the negatives, but a few things worth mentioning are that Mini Bernedoodles require daily or every other day brushing if you keep their coat long.  They do not do well being left home alone for long periods of time.  They can be a little stubborn if you are not consistent in their training and exercise.
