Micro Mini Goldendoodles: Everything You Need to Know

Micro Mini Goldendoodles, also called Petites, are the smallest size in the Goldendoodle family and one of the most sought-after companion dogs in the country. At Fox Creek Farm, I have been breeding Goldendoodles since 1999 and created the Micro Mini myself, spending years selectively breeding down to this size without sacrificing the intelligence, low-shedding coat, or warm temperament the breed is known for. If you are researching Micro Mini Goldendoodles, this guide covers everything: what they are, how they are bred, what generation to look for, what to expect in terms of size, health, grooming, and how to find a reputable breeder.

Mini Micro Goldendoodle Overview

Micro Mini Goldendoodles are designed through careful, multigenerational breeding to achieve a compact size without compromising the qualities that make Goldendoodles exceptional. Here is a quick overview of what sets them apart:

Size and Appearance

Micro Mini Goldendoodles typically weigh between 10 and 25 pounds and stand under 14 inches at the shoulder. Their coat ranges from wavy to curly and comes in colors including cream, golden, apricot, and patterns like phantom or parti. Their compact size makes them well-suited to apartments, smaller homes, and anyone looking for a dog that travels easily.

Temperament

Known for their gentle and friendly nature, Micro Goldendoodles inherit the best behavioral traits from both of their parent breeds. They are highly sociable, intelligent, and eager to please, making them excellent companions for children and seniors alike.

Health and Lifespan

With a life expectancy of around 14 to 17 years, they are generally healthy but, like all breeds, can be prone to certain genetic conditions. Responsible breeding practices are crucial to minimize health risks and ensure the well-being of these dogs.

Care and Maintenance

Their energy levels range from moderate to high, requiring regular exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Grooming needs are moderate, with regular brushing to prevent matting and professional grooming recommended every few months.

Training and Socialization

Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them highly trainable. Early socialization and positive reinforcement techniques are key in shaping well-behaved and confident adult dogs.

Micro Mini Goldendoodles make exceptional companions and therapy dogs for families, singles, and seniors alike. Their size, temperament, and low-shedding coats make them one of the most versatile small breeds available today.

What Is a Micro Mini Goldendoodle?

A Micro Mini Goldendoodle is a selectively bred, compact version of the Goldendoodle, produced by starting with a Miniature Poodle and Golden Retriever cross and then spending one to three additional generations breeding the smallest dogs in each litter toward a target weight under 25 pounds. This is not a shortcut process. It takes time, careful selection, and a deep understanding of genetics to produce a Micro Mini Goldendoodle that is small in size but sound in health and temperament. Despite their compact frame, these dogs have outsized personalities, combining playfulness, affection, and adaptability in equal measure.

Creator of the Micro Mini Goldendoodle

I created the Micro Mini Goldendoodle at Fox Creek Farm after years of working with Goldendoodles and recognizing that many families, particularly those in apartments or smaller homes, wanted everything the breed offered in a smaller package. My focus throughout was never just size. Every generation I bred toward this goal was also evaluated for health, coat quality, and temperament, because a smaller dog that is anxious, unhealthy, or unpredictable is not a success.

I am also the founder of the Goldendoodle Association of North America and have been a pioneering breeder since 1999, so this work has been a natural extension of a lifelong commitment to the breed. If you are looking for a Micro Mini Goldendoodle from the breeder who created the size, you are in the right place.

Micro Mini Goldendoodle Generations Explained: F1, F1b, F2, F2b and Multigen

Micro Mini Goldendoodle generations refer to the specific lineage and breeding combinations that define their genetic makeup. Because it takes multiple generations of downsizing to reach this smallest size, Micro Mini Goldendoodles are not available in the F1 generation and rarely in the F1B generation.

F1 Mini Goldendoodles

F1 Mini Goldendoodles are the first generation, resulting from a direct cross between a purebred Miniature Poodle and a purebred Golden Retriever, offering a 50/50 genetic split. Micro Goldendoodles are not available in this F1 generation.

F1b generations

F1b generations involve breeding an F1 Mini Goldendoodle back to a Miniature or Toy Poodle, enhancing the hypoallergenic qualities with a 75/25 Poodle to Golden Retriever ratio in approximately 50% of the litter. Micro Goldendoodles are rarely available in this F1b generation.

F2 Micro Mini Goldendoodles

F2 Micro Mini Goldendoodles are second-generation, created by breeding two F1 Mini Goldendoodles together, maintaining a balanced mix of both breeds. However, this generation will produce several puppies in each litter that have a flat coat that will shed similarly to a Golden Retriever. It is also unlikely this generation will produce puppies small enough to fall into the Micro Mini Goldendoodle category.

F2b Micro Mini Goldendoodles

F2b is a second-generation backcross, where an F2 is bred back to a Miniature or Toy Poodle, further emphasizing the downsizing, resulting in strong Poodle traits such as very curly coats.

Multigen Micro Mini Goldendoodles

Multigen Micro Mini Goldendoodles are produced by breeding two Micro Mini Goldendoodle generations beyond the second (F2 or higher), ensuring a consistent quality and characteristic of the breed. It is this generation that allows for creating wavy-coated, non-shedding Micro Mini Goldendoodles.

Each generation offers its unique blend of characteristics, from coat type to temperament, allowing prospective owners to choose a dog that best fits their lifestyle and preferences.

How big will a micro Goldendoodle get?

Micro Mini Goldendoodles typically weigh between 10 and 25 pounds and stand no taller than 14 inches at the shoulder. The exact size depends on the generation, the size of the parent dogs, and how many generations of selective downsizing have been applied. Because reaching this size requires multiple generations of careful breeding, there is natural variation even within a litter. A reputable breeder who has been producing Micro Mini Goldendoodles for multiple generations will be able to give you a realistic size estimate based on the specific parent dogs, not just a general range.

Grooming Tips for Micro Goldendoodles

Grooming a Micro Goldendoodle is essential for their health and comfort, focusing on their coat, nails, and overall hygiene. Regular brushing, at least a few times a week, is crucial to prevent matting and keep their coat smooth and clean. Due to their curly or wavy and sometimes dense hair, professional grooming every 6-8 weeks is recommended to trim their coat and avoid overgrowth.

Bathing should be done as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo to maintain their skin’s natural oils. Don’t forget to clean their ears regularly to prevent infections, especially since Goldendoodles can be prone to ear issues. Trimming nails monthly is important to avoid discomfort and mobility problems. Incorporating dental care into their routine, such as brushing their teeth or using dental chews, will promote oral health.

Starting these grooming habits early will help your Micro Goldendoodle become accustomed to routine care, making it a smoother process for both of you.

Shedding and Coat Type

When properly bred using DNA-tested parents, Micro Mini Goldendoodles are low to non-shedding. This is one of the most important reasons to work with a breeder who DNA tests for coat type rather than assuming any Micro Mini Goldendoodle will automatically have a non-shedding coat. Certain generations, particularly F1 and F2, can produce puppies that shed. Multigenerational Micro Mini Goldendoodles from two DNA-confirmed non-shedding parents are the most reliable option for families who want a dog with minimal shedding. Consistent grooming also plays a role in keeping the coat healthy and reducing loose hair in the home.

Brushing

  • Brush Micro Goldendoodles regularly, at least three times a week, to prevent matting.
  • Use a slicker brush to effectively manage and detangle their coats.
  • Incorporate a comb for areas prone to knotting, like behind the ears and under the arms.
  • Consistent brushing distributes natural oils, keeping the coat healthy and shiny.
  • Start early to acclimate them to brushing, making it a positive experience.

Hair Trimming

Regular professional grooming is recommended, but trimming hair around the muzzle and private areas can extend the time in between grooming appointments.

Nail Care

  • Trim nails monthly to prevent discomfort and mobility issues.
  • Use a dog-specific nail clipper or grinder for a smooth finish.
  • Keep an eye on the dewclaws, if present, as they can grow into the paw pad if left untrimmed.
  • Regular trimming avoids overgrowth that can lead to painful splitting or cracking.

Dental Hygiene

  • Brush teeth regularly with dog-specific toothpaste to prevent plaque buildup and gum disease.
  • Introduce dental hygiene early to get them comfortable with the process.
  • Dental chews and toys can supplement brushing, promoting oral health.
  • Annual dental check-ups with a vet ensure any issues are caught early.

cream goldendoodle in grassHealth Issues in Micro Mini Goldendoodles

Micro Mini Goldendoodles may inherit health issues common to their parent breeds, Miniature Poodles and Golden Retrievers.

These can include eye disorders such as progressive retinal atrophy prevalent in both parent breeds, but completely avoidable when responsible breeders use DNA screening on the parent dogs. Ear infections are also prevalent due to their floppy ears, which can trap moisture and debris.

Regular health screenings and veterinary check-ups can help identify and manage these conditions early.

A balanced diet, regular exercise, and preventive care are key to mitigating the risk of genetic health problems.

Ensuring they come from reputable breeders who test for genetic conditions can also reduce the likelihood of serious health issues.

Common Health Concerns of This Breed

Micro Mini Goldendoodles may be prone to certain genetic conditions due to their Miniature Poodle and Golden Retriever lineage.

  • Patellar luxation, where the kneecap dislocates, is another condition for which to watch.
  • Cardiac issues, including valve diseases, can be a concern, particularly in older dogs.
  • Regular veterinary visits and health screenings can help detect these issues early, allowing for prompt management or treatment.
  • A healthy lifestyle, with proper nutrition and adequate exercise, plays a crucial role in prevention.

Cost Factors & Finding Reputable Breeders

The price of a Micro Mini Goldendoodle is influenced by factors such as lineage, breeder reputation, and geographical location.Reputable breeders invest in genetic testing and health screenings, which can increase the price, but should decrease vet bills over the lifetime of the dog.Look for breeders who are transparent about their breeding practices and provide health guarantees.

While visiting the breeder’s facility and meeting the puppy’s parents can offer insight into the pup’s future health and temperament, most breeders do not allow in person visits. It is crucial to keep outsider germs from entering areas where puppies are raised. Visits can be accomplished using FaceTime or Zoom.

Refer to Goldendoodles.net for guidelines on identifying reputable breeders and understanding cost factors.

Avoiding Scams & Unethical Breeders

Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true; they often indicate a scam or unethical breeding practices. Request to see health clearances and genetic testing documents for both puppy parents. Avoid breeders who cannot provide a history of the puppy or its parents. Always use secure payment methods and insist on a detailed contract outlining the terms of sale.

Comparing Micro, Mini, and Toy Goldendoodles

When considering a Goldendoodle, it’s essential to understand the terminology in the size variations to find the best fit for your lifestyle. Micro, Petite, and Toy Goldendoodles are all referring to the same size.

Micro Goldendoodles:

  • Typically weigh between 10-25 pounds.
  • Stand under 14 inches tall at the shoulder.
  • Ideal for those with limited space, such as apartment dwellers.
  • Often possess a calm demeanor, making them suitable companions for seniors or families with children.

Mini Goldendoodles

  • Weigh between 26 to 35 pounds.
  • Height ranges from 14 to 17 inches at the shoulder.
  • Balance the compact size of the Micro with a bit more robustness, suitable for active individuals or families.
  • Maintain a friendly and trainable nature, similar to their larger and smaller counterparts.

Toy Goldendoodles

This is just another popular name for the Micro Mini Goldendoodle.

Micro vs. Mini vs. Toy Goldendoodle

Choosing between a Micro, Mini, and Toy Goldendoodle comes down to personal preference, lifestyle, and space availability.  Remember that Micro and Toy are the same size.

Micro Goldendoodles are perfect for those seeking the smallest size Goldendoodle with the temperament and hypoallergenic qualities of the breed.

Mini Goldendoodles offer a middle ground, providing a bit more size and energy for active families or individuals while still being manageable in smaller living spaces.

Toy Goldendoodles or Micro Mini Goldendoodles focus on achieving the tiniest stature, appealing to those looking for a petite companion that retains the breed’s desirable traits.

Each variant brings the affectionate, intelligent, and hypoallergenic nature of the Goldendoodle breed into homes of varying sizes and lifestyles, ensuring there’s a perfect match for almost anyone interested in these loving companions.

Tips When Buying From a Private Breeder

When buying a Micro Mini Goldendoodle from a private breeder, there are several critical steps to ensure a responsible and informed purchase. Firstly, it’s crucial to conduct thorough research on the breeder’s reputation and practices. Seek out breeders who are transparent about their breeding process and prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs. This includes ensuring that the breeder performs genetic testing and health screenings on the parent dogs to minimize the risk of inheritable conditions. Look for signs of a positive, clean, and loving environment where puppies are socialized and cared for properly.

Secondly, understanding the specific needs of a Micro Mini Goldendoodle is key to a successful adoption. These dogs are known for their friendly disposition, intelligence, and low-shedding coats, making them appealing for families and individuals with allergies. However, they also require regular grooming, exercise, and mental stimulation. Discuss with the breeder the puppy’s health history, temperament, and any initial training they have received. It’s also beneficial to ask about the size and temperament of the parent dogs to get a sense of how your puppy might develop over time.

Lastly, prepare your home and family for the arrival of your new puppy. This includes purchasing the necessary supplies such as a comfortable bed, appropriate food, grooming tools, and toys for stimulation. Plan for puppy training classes to help with socialization and obedience training from an early age. Establishing a relationship with a trusted veterinarian for vaccinations and regular check-ups is also important. Following these tips can help ensure a smooth transition for your Micro Mini Goldendoodle into its new forever home, fostering a healthy, happy relationship for years to come.

We received our second Goldendoodle from Fox Creek Farm and couldn’t be happier. They put research, genetic testing and time into producing wonderfully healthy pups. They also do their best to match a puppy’s personality with potential owner’s requirements. Also, they follow up with owners to see if they’re any questions or concerns. Great people to work with!

Absolutely the place to go if you are anywhere near West Virginia. Everyone who meets our mini goldendoodle wants to know where such an awesome pup came from and we are happy to tell them that even though we live in Philadelphia, we wouldn't consider using anyone other than Kelsey and the FC Farm team.

We have two golden doodles from FCF and I can't say enough good things about this breeder! Amy and Kelsey are so diligent about the quality of their dogs - they are meticulous about health testing and their breeding practices in general. Their dogs have wonderful temperaments and are beautiful as well. It's obvious they genuinely care about the welfare of each and every one of their puppies, as they spend a great deal of time matching the right dog with the right people/families. When you get a puppy from FCF, you have their support for the life of your dog, not just until you bring it home. I wouldn't get a dog from anywhere else and highly recommend FCF to anyone looking for what will be one of the best decisions you ever make! 🐾

We had an absolutely wonderful experience with Fox Creek's Farm, particularly Kelsey was fantastic from start to finish. Communication was clear and consistent. It's very clear how much care and intention goes into their program. We couldn't have asked for a better puppy, he's the perfect fit for our family. He's healthy, happy and so well socialized - we can tell that he was given so much love and care during his first weeks at Fox Creek. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a reponsible, highly knowledgeable and caring breeder. We will be coming back for more! Thank you to the Fox Creek Farm team, forever grateful!

Everything this company/organization does has been truly lovely. In 2024, I reached out to them as my other pup (Copper), a service dog, was going to retire in the nearish future, and I was looking for adding a puppy to our clan to begin growing and learning, so that she would be ready by the time Copper retired. We immediately heard back from Kelsey @ Fox Creek Farm. Once there was a pup available in the litter we were interested in, we could set up an appointment to do a little bit of preliminary service dog testing to pick the ideal candidate for our family and the services this pup would be providing me. And that's when we met our new companion of Lizzie & Gunnar's summer litter. She joined our family in September and we've worked so hard together to learn basic manners and skills for the work she'll be doing to support me, and she's been nothing but an absolute delight. This puppy, Nessie, has now been with me/us for 18 months, and she's perfect. She's filled with joy and excitement, is incredibly smart, and learns everything we need to work on so quickly. I'm beyond relieved and grateful for FCF for their program, for ensuring that the puppies are in the best health possible, and for also working with me through the service dog requests I submitted an inquiry for. I also have thoroughly appreciated the understanding that FCF provided when, for medical reasons, we needed to delay Nessie's spaying procedure. FCF is amazing and I would be thrilled to get any future pups from them. I know it's a privilege to be able to pay for one of their pups, AND I'm also here to say that it's absolutely worth it.

All the pictures have the puppy and her elated to hang out with her siblings lol she's a wild child and has so much personality.

I did loads of research in finding the best breeder and I’m so happy to have found FCF! They really have the best looking and best tempered golden doodles out there. My baby, Koda, is everything we could have asked for in a puppy. He is very affectionate, highly intelligent, active, and has a strong personality of his own already at 15 weeks. My husband and I are obsessed with him. Don’t be intimidated about their puppy pairing policy—I went in wanting a red and blonde puppy as my top 2 color choices and got paired with a rare, beautiful merle gem with a personality that pairs so well with my family and me. They REALLY know what they’re doing when pairing families with their perfect, puppy match so trust the process & be detailed in your application! Thank you Kelsey & Amy!

She truly has an amazing personality that fits our family. I already want a second dog from them!

This breeder is so incredibly responsible and great with communication. I am now on my second dog with them. My first was a mini golden doodle born in 2007 and lived for 16.5 years. He had amazing personality and energy. Awesome with kids and went to work with me daily for a majority of his life. He was super smart and easy to train because he just wanted to please you. He was my best friend for those -6.5 years. My heart was broken when I
Lost him, but my life had changed so much and the last two years were hard on him. I had added two young children to our home and just couldn’t give him the attention he needed. Flash forward a full year and I was ready for a new fur baby. FCF was ready and helped me find the perfect pup to join my small family. They walked me through a board and train program for our new puppy and has continued to be available to me for questions and guidance when our puppy broke his leg this past summer. I felt so supported as a first time dog owner in 2007 and even more so as a single mom in 2024.

We welcomed our Goldendoodle, Louie, into our family from Fox Creek Farms and couldn’t be happier with our experience! Louie is incredibly friendly, loves people, and immediately bonded with our family—including our older grumpy cat! She’s playful, social, and gets along wonderfully with other dogs too.

Fox Creek Farms was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. They were responsive, thorough, and it’s clear they genuinely care about the puppies they raise. They also provided us with a ton of helpful information as first-time Goldendoodle owners, which made the transition so much smoother.

We’re so grateful for the wonderful start Louie had in their care and highly recommend Fox Creek Farms to anyone looking for a loving, well-socialized puppy. Louie is a great dog.

I now have my third doodle from them so have visited the farm several times. They provide a safe, healthy, and extremely clean environment for their puppies. They thoroughly socialize their puppies so that they were ready for us and our two boys. Crate training was a breeze and our newest one never even had an accident in the house. Of course, now he sleeps in the bed with us:). Don't think twice about getting a doodle from Fox Creek!

I have nothing but positive things to say about Amy, Kelsey and the whole Fox Creek Farms community they have built. My family has owned/currently owns 8 of their golden doodles, ranging from mini to standard. These dogs have been invaluable members of our family. FCF’s support did not end the day we took each pup home - it has been ongoing, they are truly invested in their dogs and the dogs’ families. They are a great source for information and are very thorough. Fox Creek also has a great owners group on social media, allowing us all to connect and ask questions and share photos and stories.

We picked up our sweet Camille 2 days ago. She is a petite Goldendoodle and will weigh under 25 pounds. I had 2 requirements,
that I could take her/him on a plane and that he/she have the temperment to be a therapy dog. My last dog was a 120 pound Bernese Mountain Dog who worked as a therapy dog. That experience was very rewarding and i wanted to continue that way of giving back to the.community.

Camille is adjusting to her new home wonderfully. She didn't eat anything the first 24 hours, just drank a little water. But after that it's obvious she loves her PawTree kibble. The first 36 hours she was very calm. She liked her little crinkly lamb and her red bone. But today she's gotten playful and bouncy. She has a ball as big as her head that she likes to chase and chew on. She's only had 1 accident in the house which happened because we weren't paying attention to her. She loves everybody but it's clear I, Mommy, am her favorite. She follows me wherever i go. I got a soft carrier that I can take on a plane. I had errands to do today so she went with me, including the grocery store. She just slept in her carrier in the grocery cart. No one even knew she was there. She readily gets in her crate. We have to close the latch because she instantly found out how to open it.

She has the perfect personality for being a therapy dog. She'll let anyone hold her. I took her to her vet who declared her "perfect."

It's clear that during her first 8 weeks with Fox Creek Farm she was loved and well taken care of. I chose Fox Creek because of the number of years they have been breeding goldendoodles and have been choosing dogs to breed that will forward a healthy line. They answered all of my questions and never got annoyed with the number of times I contacted them. Their website was very extensive with lots of advice on raising the dog. The breeder of my last dog had no interest in him after I picked him up, not even with health problems he developed. I know that the folks at Fox Creek want to know the good and the bad of their dogs and will incorporate information to breeding subsequent litters.

To tell the truth, I had concerns that
Fox Creek promoted a particular brand of dog food. The Paw Tree company is a multi level marketing business and Fox Creek makes money when their clients buy their products. But that fact didn't cancel my confidence in their commitment to each dog and to further the health of the breed. I will have my vet evaluate the quality of Paw Tree ingredients. I'm sure that Fox Creek has reason to trust Paw Tree, but they are not the only company making good products for dogs. Ultimately, I will follow the advice of my vet.

The bottom line is I feel really good about having chosen Fox Creek as the breeder of my dog. They are not just a business making money from breeding dogs. There are companies who charge less for their puppies. But my confidence in the breeder of my baby is worth the price I paid. I am fortunate to be able to afford the price and I can't put a price on knowing that whatever happens in the health of my dog, Fox Creek has done all that's possible to create the
best there is of the breed.

We picked up our puppy the other day and came home with two. All of FCF puppies are adorable. Kelsey is always there to answer any questions you may have. If you are looking for a great pup, I do recommend them.

In December 2022, my husband and I had a chance encounter with a couple who owned a golden doodle from Fox Creek Farms and raved about the care they took in their breeding program. We had just lost our 14-year-old dog and weren’t sure our hearts were ready but we knew the dog we met was special. Fast forward … we are now the doting “parents” of a beautiful ball of fluff who just turned one. The couple we met by fate couldn’t have been more right about Fox Creek Farms! We are so confident in Fox Creek’s program for raising healthy pups with gentle temperaments, we could never adopt a puppy from any other breeder. We just adore our pup. 🥰 We truly appreciate the care Kelsey and Amy take to be sure your dogs are healthy in every way and that they are placed in loving homes.

She is the smartest, most pleasant dog we have ever owned. She wants to please and she learns so fast! She has filled the hearts of these empty nesters. 🐾💖

I’m so lucky I found Fox Creek Farms before purchasing a mini Goldendooodle. They were true professionals from the time I completed my application to the awesome day I picked up our baby girl! We named her Bella after her Mom. She is so adorable and sweet as can be. Her temperament and disposition is exactly what I was looking for. Fox Creek Farm’s careful and selective breeding over the last 25 years has maintained the traits and characteristics of both the golden retriever and the poodle. I can already see this in Bella. I look forward to many more years with this beautiful girl!
